Experience accessibility at ETH at the “Rights of Persons with Disabilities” Action Days
From 27 August until 10 September, ETH Zurich will be holding its university-wide “Rights of Persons with Disabilities” Action Days to raise awareness about disabled people’s rights and accessibility at ETH. Take advantage of the opportunity to discover more about these topics.
Rights of Persons with Disabilities Action Days
Awareness workshops that offer a new perspective, courses on digital accessibility, barrier-free tours and an interactive exhibition on the topic of “barrier-free”: during the “Rights of Persons with Disabilities” Action Days, which will take place from 27 August until 10 September 2022, ETH Zurich will be hosting a range of events open to the entire ETH community – students, faculty, trainees, researchers and other employees. Let’s make science barrier-free
A campaign with the slogan “Let’s create science without limits!” will also raise awareness of the importance of establishing an inclusive teaching and research environment – ideally free of all barriers, obstacles and limitations. After all, this is an issue that affects us all: every day, we all encounter obstacles – some easier, others harder to overcome. The limitations imposed on us by our surroundings vary depending on our physical condition. Due to an accident, an illness or simply getting older, factors such as a steep flight of stairs, tiny print or poor room acoustics can suddenly present insurmountable barriers that exclude people with limited mobility or disabilities. ETH Zürich is striving to minimise these barriers, or better yet eliminate them altogether, so that everyone can enjoy largely barrier-free access to university buildings and services.
Accessibility in education
Seven new lively and colourful comics illustrate how education – teaching materials and lectures – can be made barrier-free and accessible. How can subheadings help structure digital content? Which colours and contrasts are recommended for graphics and diagrams? What are good ways of creating sensible, informative alternative texts (descriptions of images or photographs)?

Barrier-?free at ETH Zurich
In autumn 2020, the Executive Board gave the green light to the implementation of the barrier-?free project: over the course of the next few years, people with disabilities or people with special needs – whether students, lecturers, researchers, staff or visitors – should benefit from greatly improved access to ETH buildings and services.
The proposed measures will be implemented in 14 sub-?projects in three categories: “Construction, Building usage and Architecture”, “Organisation, Process and Culture” and “Technology, Communication and Teaching”.
